My Boo

“Kenapa nak bahasakan diri sebagai Ibu bila cakap dengan suami?” Mak suddenly asks me early Sunday morning. At first I didn’t understand her question.

“Hah?” Of course lah I’m very puzzled. Maybe she was talking about Kak Miah, my sister who refers herself as Ibu when she talks to her husband. Her son, nieces and nephews called her Ibu as well.

“Ana tu bahasakan diri sebagai Bu bila cakap ngan Syam,” Mak explain her question.

“Bukan Bu la, Mak. Boo” I replied, as if the pronunciation is very different. “Lagipun budak-budak panggil Ana, Mama…. bukan Ibu, macam Kak Miah.”

‘Tak baik tau suami kita panggil kita ibu ke, mama ke, mak ke. Dia tu suami kita, bukan anak kita,” Mak continues her ceramah, early Sunday morning. I never thought we will discuss this early (as in 7 am) in the morning.

“Boo tu macam darling la, Mak. Cakap omputeh. Heheheheheh,” I explained further.

“Hmm” Mak replied nonchalantly.

Well, my caller ringtone in Gen’s handphone is Usher’s My Boo. But that is not the reason why he called me Boo. Actually he starts calling me Boo after the movie Monster Inc. Boo is that little girl’s who screamed so loud but laugh even louder. I called him Kitty but that nick did not suit him. Everytime we watch a movie, we always nicknaming each other by the characters in that movie. However, the nick Boo just clicked with me. After that we have Usher’s My Boo song become a hit. So I conveniently told Gen that I want him to dedicate that song to me. LOL.

But the best part of my conversation with Mak followed shortly. I always wondered why she calls Abah as“De”. I immediately asks her, “Abis tu, Mak tu panggil Abah, De. Kenapa? De tu kan panggilan adik beradik Abah kat dia (Abah is a third child). Mak bukan adik Abah, kan?"

“De tu, Kande (Kanda).” Mak replied quietly. LOL I think she’s blushing. But I cannot tell because she was facing the washing machine and her voice is partly muffled.
